Posted: 15 Feb 2020 11:44 AM PST I wanted to share with you all some observations about few interesting ways (that some people might not know about) of improving 7dtd's performance (and game's looks) without touching its graphics settings (except its resolution). For reference, all screenshots and comparisons of 7dtd that i'm going to show are all with the same graphics settings. PC i've made them on: Ryzen 5 3600, 32gb 3200mhz RAM, RX 580 8GB & 1440p 144hz monitor. As some of you probably know/heard - in H2 2019 Nvidia and AMD introduced in their drivers features called 'Image Sharpening'. In both cases the result of using them is the same: noticeably less blurry & clearer textures with maybe around 1-2% performance impact tops. Here are few examples (not made by me): RDR2 and GTA5 Link1 & Link2. Image Sharpening is supported on most Nvidia GPUs (worked even on my old GTX 660) and AMD's Navi, Vega, Polaris GPUs & Ryzen APUs. Here's how you can enable it in Nvidia's and AMD's driver software. It works in most games with DX9/11/12 & Vulkan APIs (+DX10 on Nvidia). From my testing on a few other indie titles - the only downside of this feature appears to be the need to run the game in fullscreen mode ('Exclusive Fullscreen mode' in 7dtd's case which can by turned on in game's launcher) as i couldn't get it to work on windowed borderless (though again, it's the result i've got from my testing and YMMV). Here's how it affects 7dtd (again, both screenshots are with the same in-game graphics settings): Link3. Quite nice improvement of textures right? Especially considering that there's no noticeable performance impact. Now here's an even better thing about Image Sharpening - it can be used to gain some really substantial performance boosts (in heavy GPU bound areas/scenarios, like that 7dtd scene i've shown above). By creating a custom resolution (that is a bit lower than the native one of your monitor) and selecting it in game's settings - with the help of Image Sharpening - we can get surprisingly good results. Here's a comparison of full 1440p (2560x1440) with sharpening off vs 1440p @85% resolution scale (2176x1224) + sharpening on: Link4. The right screenshot - even despite game being at lower resolution, thanks to IS - textures are still slightly clearer than the left screenshot right? Now compare the fps numbers on the left. That's right, not much of visual differences between these 2, but the 85% res + IS results in about +25% performance boost (almost like a free whole-tier-up GPU upgrade). The only downside of this appears to be tiny bit more jagged edges of some objects that are further away (if you look closely at the 85% res + IS screen), but it's so hard to notice (especially while being on the move/busy playing & smashin them zeds) that the performance boost (smoother gameplay) imo outweights those jagged edges. Here's an additional comparison of full 1440p (2560x1440) with sharpening off vs 1440p @80% resolution scale (2048x1152) + sharpening on: Link5. Looks like 80% with IS still has a small edge with textures and the performance is up by about ~30-35%. Jagged edges are becoming slightly more noticeable and this was the point where i personally went back to 85%, because sniping at 80% started to kinda sting my eyes. On the other hand, still a decent trade-off if you want to maximize performance and/or going full melee and/or you don't care that much about visual quality of distant objects. Here's a bunch of those screenshots in case if anybody wants to make more comparisons between them: Full 1440p (2560x1440) Image Sharpening OFF Full 1440p (2560x1440) Image Sharpening ON 1440p@90% (2304x1296) Image Sharpening ON 1440p@85% (2176x1224) Image Sharpening ON 1440p@80% (2048x1152) Image Sharpening ON Similar results can be achieved at 1080p, 4k, various ultra wide resolutions, etc. Here's how you can create those custom resolutions in Nvidia drivers and AMD's (remember to set 'Timing' setting to 'CVT reduced blank/ing' when creating a new res). Those custom resolutions are only for in-game use, you don't need to set any of them as your primary desktop resolution. Here's a video showcasing this whole thing, you can ignore its title, because i'm linking it just to show how awesome this Image Sharpening is in general (and that Sapphire TriXX is just a software dedicated for Sapphire cards which does the same thing with creating those custom resolutions). And again, everything i've described above will result in a similar performance increases in almost any DX9/10/11/12 & Vulkan game out there. Now, earlier i mentioned how those comparisons (Link3-5 and those several screenshots) are GPU bound cases as there is a clear performance improvement with those tweaks. Now onto the CPU bound scenarios as most of you probably know - are often a thing in some bigger, more complex POIs with a lot of sleepers around or in general during horde nights when there's a lot of zeds. In CPU bound moments like this one - the Image Sharpening and resolution scale trick had no effect on performance and full 1440p was giving me the same performance as 1440p@80-85%. After a quick alt-tab and by using CPU affinity (Task Manager/Process Lasso) to assign 7dtd only to the main threads of each CPU core - after tabbing back in this was the result. Yep, a 10-15% performance boost just like that. So if you have any 6c/12t, 8c/16t or even 12c/24t+ CPU - give it a try whenever you will be exploring some bigger POIs. Also, EasyAntiCheat (EAC) might be blocking access to changing game's CPU affinity/priority (at least it was in my case) so i had to disable it in game's launcher to be able to change them. More popular games made during the last few years are often more or less benefiting from HT/SMT as the engines they're built on are becoming more advanced and various game dev companies started improving the overall multicore support in reaction to 6c/12t & 8c/16t CPUs becoming mainstream which wasn't the case when 7dtd went into development (back in like ~2012/13 was it?). The last 'tweak' for such CPU bound scenarios is RAM OC. It's not as easy as setting CPU affinity and it can be a time consuming task if somebody wants to squeeze out every last bit of performance out of their RAM sticks - but (in case of Ryzen) just by following & doing things shown in this and this guide (without absolutely any RAM OC experience) after few hours (entering values from DRAM Calculator + memtest stability testing) i've managed to get my 3200mhz CL16 sticks up to a stable 3600mhz with tweaked timings which (by using the 'after CPU affinity tweak' screenshot as point of reference) resulted in another 10%+ performance increase in the same scene. It's quite unusual result since according to benchmarks - cards like RX 580/GTX 1060 are too weak to gain almost anything from RAM OC (especially at 1440p), but looks like 7dtd is a really strange & unpredictable beast after all. Sadly i couldn't find any recent OC RAM guide for intel systems with similarly as 'straightforward' steps as those from 2 vids above. Partially probably, because of this whole thing with how RAM tweaking is more beneficial on Ryzen systems (so people probably have been focusing mainly on those), though apparently DRAM Calculator can be still used with intel to get basic RAM timings. There's also this detailed guide. Edit: Serious RAM overclocking/tweaking might in some cases cause the PC to not boot at all - nothing on the screen after an attempt to turn it on/reboot - which is quite normal during such overclocking process as this is how we find out about how much OC/tight timings our RAM sticks can handle. Resetting the BIOS to its defaults is required in such instances to get the whole PC to turn back on, so if anybody wants to get into this RAM tweaking for the first time - make sure to look up/find out where/how to reset the BIOS on your exact model of the motherboard (just in case). I'm genuinely curious about what kind of results others can achieve on various PC configs, especially with RAM (stock XMP profile vs OC'd) and playing around with CPU affinity on CPUs with HT/SMT (as resolution scale + Image Sharpening tweak is a guaranteed increase in heavily GPU bound areas/moments). Would love to hear any observations from any folks with i7 8700k/9900k regarding if they also get such fps boost (around clusters of bigger POIs) with CPU affinity trick and generally anybody with high-end heavily tweaked RAM @ like 3600 CL14 or better/similar. Yeah, i know "how the frickin frick are you supposed to benchmark such optimization mess that is 7dtd" - well, as you can see i'm very proud of mah highly sophisticated test of "standing still af and menacingly looking at GPU/CPU heavy scene" LOL. TL;DR It's possible to get ~20-35% performance increase via resolution scaling with Image Sharpening in GPU bound scenes (up to ~25% without almost any visual downgrade) and almost just as much in CPU bound ones by setting CPU affinity for the game to use main threads of each CPU core & via RAM OC. Cheers :) [link] [comments]
Does anyone else wish there was a victory condition to work toward? Posted: 15 Feb 2020 04:21 PM PST Just a few off the top of my head: Find a Cure: Scavenge/craft lab equipment and materials, run tests, tweak the vaccine juuust right. Trap zombies for experimentation, eventually discover a cure! The cure can be RNG each game, so you have to test for radioactive/viral/bacterial/supernatural(?) causes for the cure to target. Build a Plane: Construct a runway (giving asphalt a good purpose). Scavenge/craft parts for a functional plane. Find and beat the shit out of whoever was dropping nothing but beakers and canned goods in those supply crates! Summon/Discover the BBG: This might assume the zombie apocalypse was brought about by a supernatural or alien cause. Find the Big Bad Guy, kill it, the zombies go away and you win. This game is awesome as is. Just feels like it's missing that "last piece" we can work toward. [link] [comments]

Posted: 15 Feb 2020 11:43 AM PST I started a new game with a bro. He's real new to the game, so I up'd the XP to 200%. Built a base that I've used before. Didn't anticipate how fast we would level, making the zombies level...the first horde was brutal! They destroyed us so bad that we would spawn, then die. To the point where the zombies just up and quit at midnight. For real...they ran up the street and didn't come back. Spent the last 4 hours of the horde standing on high ground just waiting. Hahaha, such a failure! [link] [comments]
What is the lore for 7 Days to Die? Posted: 15 Feb 2020 10:40 AM PST I'm just asking as i tried finding it on the net myself but only found a lot of outdated info on it. There doesn't seem to be anything new past 2017. I'm interested in getting the game on PC as a lot of my good friends suggested to me. [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:58 PM PST New to the game yesterday. Not entirely sure how the servers work but my friend and I were playing on a game that I started and everytime I quit it would kick him. After doing a bit of research it seems that the servers aren't continuous and you can't play solo unless you are the host. This seems pretty silly, do they ever plan on changing that? Really enjoying the game so far, just don't like the server set up. Unless I am missing something? [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:11 PM PST My wife is joining my game from the server list and she's getting kicked randomly for no reason. Sometimes we can play 5 minutes and then sometimes we can play 2 hours and then she can join back instantly. Any ideas on a fix? It's super annoying. [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 04:09 PM PST Looking for a tougher experience but I don't want the zombies to just be bullet sponges, does higher difficulty increase zombies HP or just the damage they do? [link] [comments]
What happens when you build inside a POI and it resets the loot (default 30 days)? Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:16 PM PST Do you lose what you had inside, or does it just not reset if you have things inside of it (chests, blocks, etc)? [link] [comments]
why has my marksman level 6 rifle got a magazine size of only 4? Posted: 15 Feb 2020 10:03 AM PST As title says for some reason my marksman rifle only has a magazine size of 4 now. just noticed [link] [comments]

Permadeath RP Server Looking For Players! Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:22 AM PST Hello everyone! I have some exciting news to share. Last month I started a brand new server that was originally meant to be PvP, But after doing a community vote we decided to take a more "Unique" direction which brings us to Permadeath RP! Want to know more? Here's some key points about our server -
If this sounds like a server you'd be excited about, We're doing a fresh wipe today at about 3-4 PM EST. We do wipes once every 2 months (Or as needed if we run into updates/bugs). Below will be our server IP, Port, and Discord and I hope to see you on the server real soon! IP: 107.150.28.34 PORT: 41521 DISCORD: https://discord.gg/jAgfwmF (Ask for 7 Days to Die role in the role-request channel) EDIT: Permadeath didn't work as intended and our tool coder is looking into a fix, Server still works other than permadeath so hopefully it's still an enticing enough idea to try out! Game keeps crashing! So Frustrated! Posted: 15 Feb 2020 04:36 PM PST Hi All, Can someone assist? Game crashes about a second into loading an online game, PC should have no issues running this this with 16gb ram, I7 CPU @ 3.9ghz, SSD, etc. Thank you for any assistance! [link] [comments]
Dedicated server set up help please? Posted: 15 Feb 2020 12:02 PM PST So I'm typically a console gamer, but really enjoyed playing 7DtD on PC. I got a separate tower from a friend who is good with tech to run a dedicated server so I can play with friends (and let them play without me keeping it running on my normal PC). It is downloaded and seems to be set up, but when attempting to log in from the pc to play on, there are license issues from steam. It seems to not want me to run the game on the separate server without a separate Steam account and game license. Is there a way around this? Or do I have to buy another license? I've tried reading various previous posts, but don't understand enough to make heads or tails of it. Thanks!! [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:34 PM PST Hello, I've been trying to find information on if there is a way to load an A17.4 game in the current game (PC). There is a world that my friends and I put a lot of time into and if there is a way to save it somehow I'd like to. If anyone has a solution, thank you. [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:17 PM PST I've looked this up and i can't find anything about it. The armour looks really looks really cool and i wanna get it without using creative. [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:16 PM PST I have 7 days to die on my PC and really want to play but I don't have the internet to download the up date. Is there a way to skip the update and still play? [link] [comments]
Are there "long" pipes in the game? Posted: 15 Feb 2020 10:39 AM PST So my gf and I are building a nice sub base. We dug a hole and the zombies are falling in. Everything is great. Now we want to add some blade traps kinda in the middle of the hole so the zombies get damaged when they fall in. I saw some videos where people had some "long" pipes, but they didn't mention how these things are crafted and we cannot find these pipes. They kinda look like ventilation pipes, but we are not sure. You can see the pipes at around 1:30. It's in German , but he says something about "50s pipes". YouTube Link Can you guys help us out? [link] [comments] |
