Stuff It Took Me Too Long To Realize

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 04:33 AM PDT

I'm a pretty casual PC player since probably A14 maybe... ~1200 hours. But I tend to play in spurts and have probably never been further than day 30 or so. I like the early game, and when I come back to the game after a break, I tend to start over. These are not deep strategic tips, or maybe even all that useful, but they are early game things that it took me a while to figure out so I thought I'd put them down here for newer players. Maybe they work for you, maybe they don't, your mileage may vary. I play SP, so some of this may not apply on MP servers.

    Use your stuff

I used to have storage chests bursting with stuff I had collected. 90 painkillers that I never used because... why? Cause apparently I thought that someday I might really need them (meanwhile I'm at 20% hitpoints). Or 10 cans of food, but my stamina is at 50%... Use your stuff.

    Take the shot

Related to the first point, you know what's worse than running out of ammo? Dying with a loaded gun because you were trying to conserve ammo and misjudged that club swing. Obviously don't waste ammo if you're short on it, but too often I had a gun and ammo and died unnecessarily because I stubbornly wouldn't switch to it in a pinch. Again, a hoard of stuff in a chest never saved a person from dying.

    Bandages... right now

It probably goes without saying, but you shouldn't be bleeding out because you don't have a bandage. Cotton grows like weeds, take 60 seconds right away and grab some and turn it into cloth > bandages.

    Sweet sweet honey

Like bleeding out, infection sucks early in the game. Take a few minutes to find a couple of tree stumps and get some honey. Then CARRY IT. Honey isn't super effective at curing infection, but if you use it as soon as you're infected it'll clear it right up.

    Loot cars

I used to leave cars for later when I had a wrench, which is dumb because one of the easiest ways to find a wrench is to, duh, loot cars. I'm not talking about destroying them, just search them. And after you have a wrench, take them apart for lots of great parts and gas.

    Scrap stuff or smelt it

I am embarrassed at how long it took me to clue in that the way you get weapons parts is to scrap weapons. Duh. Don't have 7 shotguns sitting in a chest, or haul them off to the trader to sell for a couple of Dukes. Scrap those babies for the parts. However, if some item can be scraped to raw materials like iron or brass, you're better off smelting it in a forge than just scraping it.

    Loot building materials

You know all those cosmetic stacks of boxes, tarps and bags lying around in towns. They're easy sources of paper, plastic, cobblestone and cement. Use the right tool (shovel for the tarp covered cubes and piles of bags) and you'll be swimming in building materials.

    Spend some cash

I used to hoard money like I was Warren Buffett, investing for the future. Money has only one purpose... to get you stuff you want/need. Have a look at the trader's inventory once in a while, and if there's a recipe or part or whatever that you need, and you have the cash, just buy it. Going without a critical item because you'd rather have an extra 2000 Dukes sitting in a chest is silly. Spend like it's the end of the world. Oh... right.

    Finally, kill zombies

I know, duh. But when I first started playing I would sneak around, avoiding the random zombies. But those guys are walking experience points. Kill early and often and get them Eeee Peeees.

Anyway, again, these are not profound points, but they are literally things I didn't clue into at first when playing, so maybe one or two are helpful to new players.

    Base building locations

Does anyone have any good locations for base building in alpha 18? Preferably in a pre existing building with low zombie spawns etc. Thanks for any help

    Vehicle modifications?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 08:10 PM PDT

Hey guys! I'm fairly new to the game so I'm sorry if this is an obvious question, also I tried looking on google and here to no avail. Are there things like baskets or things that I can attach to my bicycle for storage? I do see it has a single row of inventory, it would be great if I can extend that.

Thanks in advance for any help! :))

    Various late game money tips

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 10:09 AM PDT

I've personally been learning a lot about how to maximize earning potential in late game, and so I want to share my findings with you all. These tips are for late game, when you have multiple levels of Better Barter (BB), and hopefully Lucky Looter too. These strategies don't have the same leverage without them, so they won't work in early game.

-Repair and Mod-out extra L6 items

Starting with the obvious, you will accumulate an abundance of L6 loot, especially lower tiered items. When you add a mod to a repaired item, it increases the value by a fixed amount based on the level of the item. It's the same amount, rather it's scrap boots or steel boots. If you hold on to it for a while, there's a high chance you'll be able to fill all 4 mod slots for a number of pieces of L6 gear you find.

-Buy cheap mods and flip them

With high levels of BB, some mods can sell for 100-300 dukes. Buy them, attach them to some L6 item you've got, and sell for a profit.

    -Use any mods

It took me a while to get over it, but you can attach wood splitter mods to L6 iron knuckles to sell. It doesn't make sense from a using perspective, but from a selling perspective, the wood splitter and the similar mods attach to any melee weapon, making them great for filling out the slots to sell, if you find or buy extras.

    -Craft mods

Some mods are very cheap to craft, so hopefully you have them unlocked. The insulated liner mod uses resources that you should have in abundance, except for possibly sewing kits. Same is true of the armor plating mod, and storage pocket mod. Weapon Flashlight mods can be crafted out of flashlights, which when attached to an L6 gun sells for hundreds more than the flashlight alone. The scope 2x mod isn't too expensive, and there may be other gun mods that are cheap to craft. I haven't analyzed them all.

-Buy every sewing kit you can

They're not a common resource at the trader, but if he's got them, you can use them to craft armor plating or insulated liner mods for selling attached to L6 armor.

-Buy every bottle of acid, honey, and eggs you can

Like the sewing kit, these resources will likely become a bottleneck for how many Pumpkin Cheesecakes and Grandpa's Awesome Sauce you can cook. You can go without, but if you happen to spot them, you will make back more than their price if you buy them, cook them, and buff your selling sprees.

-Add extra mods to L5 items

Most likely, you will allocate all of your mods to L6 items, but there may be exceptions. You may accumulate more club mods (one per club bottlenecks how fast you can pair these with L6 clubs), bow mods, helmet mods (hat mods, water purifier, helmet light), the impact bracing mod, and bandoliers. You may also just have different sensibilities about how often to sell things versus waiting to fully mod them, so this may increase the ratio of mods to L6 items. In these cases, the next best thing to do is attach them to L5 items, or even L4 if you have to.

    -Craft extra L5 items

If you've got a skill that governs crafting levels to at least L4, you'll be able to craft L5 items of that category (weapons, tools, heavy armor, light armor). It won't be often, but you will eventually collect enough extra parts that, with some extra resources, you can craft into expensive L5 items to sell. The higher tier, the better price:parts ratio.

    -Collect, buff, and sell

Keep these L5 and L6 items and extra mods in a chest, pairing them up as you go. Whenever you see fit, go to the trader with as much of it as you can, and bring a cigar, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Grandpa's Awesome Sauce, and - if you have the right Magnum Enforcer - an extra low-level magnum to equip. (Nerdy Glasses to max EXP from sales too.) Stack all the buffs, and sell it all off. Buy everything you need before the buffs wear off.

These are my strats for more money than I can spend. :)

    Zombie AI question/help

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 05:00 PM PDT

So, I have one of those pyramids with the cheesy slope walls that I stand on for horde nights. For some light, I set pillars 3 blocks away from the pyramid 4 blocks tall and put a lantern on top. For some reason, a few of the zombies will run and smack the pillars and I can't think of why. It's not connected to my base, they can't get to me by knocking them over and there's nothing attacking them from the pillar. It's just a light. Do zombies have moth DNA?

    My 7dtd world got corrupted.

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 06:43 PM PDT

Or glitched. I don't know, either way I'm distraught. I spent a lot of time playing that world with multiple friends. I always told people never to dupe, but I'm sure some did. Maybe that's why my world got messed up. I loaded back in after the usual crash, then to my dismay, half of my base reverted back into the frail house it used to be. My bunker full of loot, and the tunnels which extended to the closest town were gone. This is a sad day. It'll take a few months for me to pick the game back up. I don't know how I'll break the news to my buddy's. Love the game, but the console version is broken. I'm gonna save up for a computer...

You can pick up other player's abandoned turrets by hitting them with a pick!

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 04:38 AM PDT

Discovered this when our lobby was nuked by hackers, multiple abandoned turrets were in the crater and I tried to destroy them to get rid of them. Instead I discovered I was able to pick them up when they "broke" but with all the original mods intact, a repair kit restoring them to full power!

    Moderator request: separate console reddit

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 07:33 AM PDT

Can we have a sister reddit made (r/7daystodieconsole) so that any console posts can be consolidated in one place?

It will make it easier for console players to find the information they want and allow them a place to focus their discontent about lack of updates.

One stipulation, any console post not in that reddit gets moved there or deleted.

Darkness falls Mod question about forged steel

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 12:26 PM PDT

In the Darkness Falls mod you can only make Forged Steel at an Advanced Forge but that requires 250 Forged Steel to make. Are you expected to just find this in the world? Seems like a huge amount to have to find from breaking street lights. Any advice?
