    How to find shale oil?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 07:49 PM PST

Guy I play with reckoned that desert used to be good for shale oil in previous patches, but we can't find any out there.

We've figured out how to located ores in non-sand locales, but can't seem to locate anything surfacey in the desert to lead us to where to dig down.

Hey TFP, it is still working . . . afk-base-deluxe

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 03:20 AM PST

Did anybody else also noticed RAM usage improvement in A17.1 b8? A bunch of observations.

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 07:22 AM PST

As we know memory leaks in 7dtd have been an issue for a longer while now. I'm not sure how things were before A14, but i can clearly remember those instances when after playing for like 1-2h+ in A14, 15, 16 and 17.0 (no matter if on single player or multi/coop) - the game was slowly devouring more and more memory to the point when after like 2 hours of playing, game+system was able to climb up to even 15gb+ of total RAM usage. This is where various slowdowns/stutters were usually starting to occur more frequently (for people with 16gb of RAM in their systems), but - as most of us know - the simplest temporary fix/workaround was to just restart the game (every those 1-2h+).

I'm not sure what kind of magic TFP did in 17.1 b8, but after playing for a few days now on a newly generated 8k x 8k random gen world (single player) - i'm starting at ~8gb of total RAM usage (game+system) the moment i spawn in the game. After playing for around 2h+ i noticed that instead of climbing up as usual - it goes down to ~7gb O_O (yes, game+system). I tested it 3 times so far and everytime the result was almost the same, at least according to RTSS overlay. Again, those observations are from playing on single player only.

Edit: Just now after playing ~1,5 hour session on single player (8k RNG world) - the RAM usage went from ~7,8gb down to ~6,6gb.

Would be awesome if some (multiplayer/coop focused) players that like to use RTSS or any other system resources monitoring overlay - shared some of their observations how the game performs now (on A17.1 b8) with few people scattered "here" and "there" throughout the map and if it's still eating that much RAM as in previous Alphas or not. Excluding that microstutter caused by garbage collector which by the looks of it might be taken care of once devs update game's engine to Unity 2019.1 at some point.

Still, it looks like the game isn't free from other strange RAM-devouring behaviors though. Here's what i also noticed recently:

    1. Starting the game.
    2. Enter/spawn on a RNG 8k x 8k world. RAM usage is at ~7.7gb.
    3. Quit to main menu.
    4. Enter the same world again. RAM usage is now at ~8.7gb.
    5. Quit to main menu.
    6. Enter the same world again. RAM usage is now at ~9.7gb.
    7. After doing the same thing again, it climbs up again by ~1gb and so on.

As it's easy to predict - restarting the whole game pushes RAM usage of "the first load into the world" back to that ~8gb area.

Also, a small tip for people with 8gb of RAM and some lower-end 2/3gb VRAM GPUs that might improve your performance a bit:

Leaving web browser running in the background with loaded in bunch of tabs can be taking up quite significant amounts of RAM/VRAM which the game would really like to 'eat' and in exchange - smooth out a bit your gameplay.

    Here's a quick experiment i did. Just for reference: it's 1080p and game's details i'm using.

    • This is a picture of the "first loading into the world after starting the game". I left Firefox with a bunch of paused YT vids and other loaded in tabs in the background. Notice how much RAM/VRAM is in use: Picture

    • This is by how much RAM/VRAM usage went down after quick alt-tab and closing Firefox: Picture

It's just something worth keeping in mind for that general "leave nothing in the background while playing" rule. This is what at least helped me to "survive" on a 6+ years old GTX 660 2gb till A16.4 with ~60fps 85% of the time on those settings.

    Regards :)

    Navezgane or random

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 12:40 PM PST

What is everyone's opinion here? With a17, are people playing more of the Navezgane or are you going full random, or random with a known interesting seed? And also, why?

I have just started to play a17, so before I get to far, I figured I would ask and try accordingly.

Thanks for all the advice and thoughts!

    Fix The Microstutter

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 01:13 AM PST

I have a gtx 1080, I 7 7700k, 16gb ram and this on an ssd. The game runs at 140-200 fps on the highest settings consistently. However, there is this micro stutter constantly present in the game. No matter what graphical setting. I have tried even the lowest to test it out. I do not know why it is this way, never was prior to the 17 release for me. I took a break from the game to come back to play with friends and we are experiencing this issue. Please look into fixing this as it is game breaking for me and I am sure others as well.

Here is an example for people (dated now but still in the game):

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35bWeGARoT0

EDIT: This is not my video that I linked, just an example from youtube that is fairly recent!

EDIT #2: When I stated my fps I gave an approximation between the highest I have seen to the more common range. Again it depends on where in the world I am and what is going on. I am not stating I have 200fps consistent, nor am I saying its above 140 all the time. Just that on average I can play it around 140 up to 200, and yes there can be dips below as well. Regardless of this don't get hung up on that point as it does not affect the fact that the game microstutters terribly. For those who say "turn your graphics down" I have also tried this and achieve over 200fps on low but still have terrible stuttering. I will link photos of the build and a picture in game with the fps.

My mini bike turned into an auger!

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 05:03 AM PST

Well this is a new glitch for me...A17.0.

I had dug down one layer into grassland. I'd dug a straight line, maybe 5-6 long just to get some clay soil to make a forge. This was day 2.

Day 8, I'd gone to ride my mini bike and I accidentally drive over the shallow trench. Immediately, my back wheel acted as if it was an auger and I found myself several layers down under the surface!

My backpack was storing the mined soil and rock as it would an auger. Every time I tried to ride, down I went. Once I hit iron, I decided enough was enough and began constructing a ramp underneath and up to drive up. Mini bike just went straight through it and carried on down. At this point I picked my bike up and put it back on the road. It all seems fine now. Just thought I'd share as I've not seen this glitch mentioned before.

Crazy amount of Bears still present - Proceed without starting anew?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 04:11 PM PST

    Hey guys!

We were around for the Bears in Houses bug recently and just got back into 7 Days with the latest update today. Unfortunately the bears are still there!

Does anyone know of a way to remedy this WITHOUT starting a new game? We've worked very hard on our current base and don't want to lose it!

    Cheers, thanks guys! :)

    BM horde zombie count

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 03:56 AM PST

[RESOLVED] How is the number of zombies during a blood moon determined? It absolutely spawns significantly more than the number specified in serverconfig.xml, which confuses me somewhat.

    Blood moon horde game stage

    Posted: 14 Jan 2019 01:10 PM PST

I and a couple friends are playing together and are at very different game stages. That all makes sense when we visit separate locations/do separate quests, but how does that work on a blood moon horde? Is the game stage averaged?
