BallisticsMod, a gun realism tweaks modlet

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 08:26 AM PDT

I've been enjoying 7DTD over the past week, but once my character had acquired firearms, a number of things began to bug me about them.

I could handle there being only one kind of universal .30 caliber rifle round for the sake of a simple loot table. Hollywood cowboying the cylinder of a 44 magnum Colt Python (it's a .357), fine. I could even deal with a purportedly precision AR platform rifle having sights welded directly onto its Picatinny rail!

But shotguns that can't hit -at all- past 4 yards? UI crosshairs in my optics? Time to find a gun realism mod, I thought.

And I couldn't find one that did the minimum I felt needed to be done, so I made this:

    https://github.com/RunnerScrab/BallisticMod

    In a nutshell, it:

    • Gives firearms realistic range and accuracy based on their real-world counterparts
    • Gives fully automatic weapons realistic cyclic rates of fire
    • Removes UI crosshairs when aiming a weapon with sights or optics
    • Is a modlet, so you just need to put it in your Mods/ folder to install it

I've been playtesting it for about a day now, and I've liked how much more effective and real-feeling it's made 7DTD's guns. Mowing down mindless, shambling undead is easier, and hunting small game with a shotgun is something you can actually do now. It does make the action bits play more like L4D than 7DTD vanilla, so it might not be for everyone.

This zombie world would absolutely suck to have to try and survive in

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 09:02 AM PDT

In most zombie fiction, the zombies can't tear through most buildings if they are made of thick, tough wood, concrete or steel but the ones in this game can tear through it like cardboard. I mean, other zombie-overrun worlds would still suck but at least you don't have to worry about zombies tearing your house down to get to you. The ones in 7DtD are zombies on steroids.

6 perks you'll never regret in solo play

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 03:51 PM PDT

Choosing which perks to invest in early game is interesting to me. As I've played more, I'm getting a better since of which perks are situational, and which perks are almost universally useful. I think it's justified to put one point into any of the below perks, at a minimum. This is specifically about solo play. The perks are rank ordered, starting with #1. Share your feelings on my rationale, or your own top picks for un-regrettable early game point allocation.

Sexual Tyrannosaurus - Regardless of if you're doing a general build or an attribute build, you will always run into stamina issues with mining and melee, until you reach end game and can use only guns and gas tools. At which point, if you REALLY regret it, it should be no problem to put out for a Forgettin' Elixer

Miner 69er - Apart from the immediately improved primitive tool crafting, you will always want to destroy blocks in fewer hits.

Iron Gut - Start curbing your hunger immediately. "But won't I regret this once I have a good farm going?" That depends. Do you like XP? Iron Gut lengthens all buffs, including the XP buff from the Learnin' Elixer.

Pack Mule - Again, immediate benefit. "Will I regret it if I get a full set of pocket mods?" Needing one fewer pocket mod affords you one free slot to put something else, like a Customized Fitting or Cooling Mesh mod.

Living Off the Land - On several solo runs, I have refrained from investing in this perk because I'm looking forward to getting a good farm started. It's possible, but I am always shocked how much later it happens than I actually expect, and I always know that I would have been better off putting a point here and worrying less about food and more about other stuff.

Better Barter - The nice thing about BB is that it takes a little off the price you buy at, AND adds a little to the sales you make. Maximize the return over time by investing in this perk early.

Name a perk you weren’t really interested in that ended up being a game changer for you and why.

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 12:34 PM PDT

For me, it has to be Better Barter. I never had issues with dukes but now they're weighing down my inventory so much that I'm planning to dig out a pool in my backyard to swim in them, Scrooge McDuck style.

I also often found myself saying "wow I wish the trader had THIS particular item for sale!" And they never did. Now it seems that whenever I say that, the item appears in the stash the next time stock resets.

It's kind of spooky actually, like the game is reading my thoughts.

The difference in available stash inventory is like night and day. Now making a run to each trader every 3rd game day is actually fun, instead of being a disappointment. I wish I had put the points in much earlier.

What perk changed the game for you?

Noob Question - Is the Treasure Chest supposed to be locked?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 10:06 PM PDT

I triggered the "Raphael's" Treasure Quest from a map I found. I dug in the spot, and eventually found the chest. It is locked as a 6000+ hp chest and I dont have a key. Am I supposed to break it open? dig around it? Am I supposed to have gotten a key?

The wiki doesnt mention anything about it being locked and I cant seem to find anyone else having this issue, which leads me to believe I did something wrong.

    Escape Room Challenge

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 01:47 PM PDT

I have created an Escape room in 7 Days to Die.

It was inspired by the one created by Capp00. So I hope he plays mine!

You download and extract it into your saved games folder. Then you enter the game and run or teleport to the start.

When you get there you enter into the building and the door closes behind you. You need your wits to solve a series of challenges and win once you get out.

    The rules are:
    - Enter with only a bedroll in your inventory, otherwise empty your and toolbelt and use only what you find inside. There is a specific area where you must put your bedroll down inside.
    - You cant break anything, scrap anything or make any changes or modifications, in particular no changes allowed to electric items.
    - No creative mode, flying, etc.

Detailed info and help is in the readme file, but you can Teleport to the start:
    tp -1750 1670

    Download link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1GTOk4sb7yTdMcg1DTA49Mk3D17uIalEO?usp=sharing

I would absolutely love to watch any players who stream this! It is meant to be tough but not impossible.

Note that this requires Alpha 19.1 since I've been waiting for some specific bug fixes. There is a version for Alpha 18 available also.

    Workbenches/Cement Mixers/Chemstations etc.

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 07:33 AM PDT

Rarely are these working at the traiders. There should be an early quest to gather materials and other things needed to repair them.
